Desert Island Discs

My tween daughter Elise spent her own money on a new iPod Touch and is now the queen of the app and princess of iTunes. I had loaded all my CDs on to my own iPod when I got it 4 years ago (first generation baby!) and done nothing more than hit the "shuffle" button since then.

Last night (with Elise's help) I finally figured out iTunes and bought a few old favorites. It made me think of that "Desert Island Discs" thing they used to do on the radio, where you'd send in your favorite 3 songs and then keep your fingers crossed that they'd play them and announce your name on the radio. Does it get any better than that?

Janet's Desert Island Discs:
1. Save a Prayer by Duran Duran
2. This Time by INXS

and, drumroll...Better Man by Pearl Jam, probably my very favorite song in the history of songs. Does my age show? Elise says my songs are lame but hello. Her favorite song is called "My Life Would Suck Without You."

What are your Desert Island Discs?

  1. I envy that you can pick three songs! I have such a hard time picking a "favorite" anything! I can't pick specific songs, but my desert island discs would probably have something to do with Ben Folds, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and John Mayer. haha!! What a mix!

  2. Same here--I can't pick three all-time faves that I'd be stuck with forever. But I'll play along anyhoo:

    1. "God Only Knows" by The Beach Boys
    2. "More Than This" by Peter Gabriel
    3. "Clair de Lune" by Claude Debussy (preferably a solo piano version)

  3. Hahaha, yes, your age shows, but so is everyone's, I am sure! And, hmm, can you imagine a 30 year-old sincerely enjoying the same music teenagers do?

Now, my problem is that I cannot list 3 songs, if I can choose groups, that would be Dire Straits, Dr. Hook and Guns N' Roses, haha that's diverse, isn't it?

  4. Wow. I thought you were allowed to choose an entire album for your desert island disc. So I'm changing the rules like Kanelstrand did. Mine would be:

    Goodbye Yellow Brick Road/Elton John
    Making Movies/Dire Straits
    Toys In the Attic/Aerosmith

    Tough choices.

  5. Wait, wait, wait. Is it too late to switch All The World's a Stage by Rush for Toys in the Attic? I know I enjoy listening to that one over and over and over, because in 1980, I did.

  6. Hi Janet,

Ow boy, ipods...I love them. I have a shuffle and a nano and my husband has a touch. We also have 2 iphones in our house. I love the ipad as well, don't have one but maybe someday. I try to avoid the apple store, I love their products and unfortunately, want them all.

    Nice to meet you.

  8. Well, I agree. Three is tough. Here goes.

My all-time favorite song is The Girl from Ipanema. This is my parent's song (in my head) after many conversations about their 60s meeting and summer romance, leading to me. Then, Stevie Ray Vaughan's Little Wing. Just beautiful guitar. And Tennessee Flat-top Box (Johnny Cash or Lyle Lovett version) because it is so pure sounding.

For albums, Albert King Live at The Fillmore West, the Stone's England's Newest Hitmakers, and just about anything Eric Clapton.

I have a thing for guitar.
